Engebretsen through the canopy of his own aircraft, this frame shows a Skyraider rolled into a turn with both wings fully loaded, the stores strung along multiple ejector racks visible in a serrated line beneath each wing. That load capacity, combined with an endurance measured in hours rather than minutes, is what made the A-1 indispensable in Southeast Asia. Engebretsen flew with Operating Location Alpha Alpha, the 56th Special Operations Wing detachment at Da Nang, whose Skyraiders supported MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams and stood combat search and rescue alert under the callsign Sandy.
