An A-1 Skyraider is silhouetted against a Southeast Asian sunset in this air-to-air photograph, taken from a companion aircraft during a coastal transit. Rugged, propeller-driven, and able to loiter and absorb battle damage far better than contemporary jets, the Skyraider was flown by U.S. Air Force Air Commandos and South Vietnamese pilots for close air support, armed reconnaissance, and rescue escort ('Sandy') missions throughout the Vietnam War.
