A-1 Skyraider in Flight Over Open Water, Southeast Asia, circa 1969
A Douglas A-1 Skyraider, nicknamed 'Spad' or 'Sandy' by its crews, flies low over open water during the Vietnam War. These propeller-driven attack aircraft flew close air support and combat search-and-rescue escort missions from bases such as Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, protecting downed airmen deep inside hostile territory.
