Off-Duty Portrait, Vietnam Era, Date Unknown. Away from the flight line, servicemen traded flight suits and fatigues for aloha shirts and light slacks. This unidentified man — most likely an Air Force officer from the Engebretsen collection — poses on a stairway beside a rail strung with plumeria blossoms, imagery closely associated with Hawaii, the most heavily used Rest and Recuperation destination for American personnel serving in Southeast Asia. Between 1966 and 1972 hundreds of thousands of troops rotated through authorized R&R sites in Honolulu, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Sydney, where a few days of ordinary clothing and ordinary life separated one combat tour from the next.
