A-1 Skyraider in Low-Level Flight Over Coastal Waters, Southeast Asia
An A-1 Skyraider, nicknamed 'Sandy' or 'Spad' by its crews, banks low over a coastal bay in Southeast Asia. Rugged and heavily armed, the Skyraider served as the primary rescue escort aircraft for U.S. Air Force combat search-and-rescue missions during the Vietnam War, protecting downed airmen while under enemy fire.
