Douglas A-1 Skyraider in Flight with Shark-Mouth Nose Art, Air-to-Air View
A Douglas A-1 Skyraider, the propeller-driven workhorse of Vietnam-era close air support and combat search-and-rescue escort, banks in flight with its distinctive shark-mouth nose art on display. Nicknamed the 'Spad' by its crews, the rugged, heavily armed Skyraider could carry more ordnance than many jet aircraft of its era and remained in service long after piston-engine fighters were considered obsolete, prized for its ability to loiter over the battlefield and absorb battle damage.
