Southeast Asia, circa 1969-1970. An airman in a flying coverall sits in a squadron operations room, boot hooked over the arm of a battered office chair, sunglasses tucked into his collar and a field telephone on the floor beside him. Rooms like this one, plywood-walled and furnished with whatever was to hand, were where crews waited between missions, took the alert call, and marked up the maps taped to the wall. The photograph belongs to the collection of the airman known in these files as 'Doc' Blanchard, one of several veterans whose personal material was preserved by Skyraider pilot Donald L. Engebretsen.
