Photographs like this were snapped by pilots with personal cameras carried in the cockpit, and they capture something official imagery rarely did: the long, quiet stretches between contact. A-1 crews flying Sandy rescue alert and Spad close-air-support missions frequently launched before dawn or recovered after sunset, and the piston-engined Skyraider's endurance meant hours aloft.
