A-1 Skyraider Silhouetted Against a Low Sun Over Coastal Water, Southeast Asia, Vietnam War Era

A wingman's aircraft - almost certainly a Douglas A-1 Skyraider - hangs silhouetted against a low sun during an overwater transit in Southeast Asia. Photographs like this were snapped by pilots with personal cameras carried in the cockpit, and they capture something official imagery rarely did: the long, quiet stretches between contact. A-1 crews flying Sandy rescue alert and Spad close-air-support missions frequently launched before dawn or recovered after sunset, and the piston-engined Skyraider's endurance meant hours aloft.
