Douglas A-26/B-26 Invader and Transport Aircraft on Static Display Line, USAF, 1950s

A line of United States Air Force aircraft, headed by a twin-engine Douglas A-26/B-26 Invader light bomber, sits on a rain-dampened ramp during a 1950s base open house. Behind it, transport aircraft and the towering tail of a Superfortress-class heavy bomber illustrate the range of aircraft types operated by the postwar Air Force. Public flight-line displays such as this one were a common feature of Armed Forces Day and base open house events during the early Cold War, allowing civilians to walk among -- and often board -- the aircraft that had recently served in, or descended from, the Second World War and Korean War.
