This in-flight photograph shows a Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, the United States Air Force's postwar heavy transport derived from the wartime B-29 Superfortress bomber design. Recognizable by its distinctive double-bubble fuselage and four powerful radial engines, the C-97 (and its aerial-tanker sibling, the KC-97) entered service after World War II and became a workhorse of Cold War-era strategic airlift and in-flight refueling operations well into the 1950s and 1960s.
