Naval Deck Gun from SMS Emden on Railroad Flatcar — WWI War Trophy, Cincinnati, Ohio

A hand-lettered sign identifies this pedestal-mounted deck gun as a trophy from SMS Emden, the German light cruiser whose Indian Ocean raiding campaign made her one of the most famous warships of the First World War before her destruction at the Battle of Cocos in 1914. After the Armistice, guns from Emden and other German vessels were distributed to American cities as war trophies; this example is shown awaiting further transport on a Cincinnati, Ohio rail siding, circa 1919-1920.
