Two sailors man an aft tracking station aboard a small U.S. Navy patrol vessel somewhere in the Pacific, ca. 1943-1945. The mounted board with sighting arms was typical of the simplified mechanical computers used aboard PT boats and other small combatants to estimate an enemy target's course and speed ahead of a torpedo or gun engagement. Crews on these vessels worked in close, exposed conditions, often shedding uniform shirts in the tropical heat while standing ready at battle stations far from the protection of larger fleet units.
