Wat Phnom Stupa and Hilltop Garden, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Wat Phnom, the hilltop shrine for which Phnom Penh is named, is seen here rising above its landscaped public garden. The great stupa, believed to house relics and to mark the legendary founding site of the city, has long served as both a religious pilgrimage site and a civic park for residents. This mid-20th-century photograph captures the temple mound in a tranquil, well-tended state typical of pre-war Phnom Penh. Project: 218694
