American infantrymen of the 2nd Infantry Division move cautiously through the ruined village of Harperscheid during the winter campaign of 1944-1945. Fighting in the Ardennes-Eifel border region, following the Battle of the Bulge, left many small villages reduced to rubble, their churches and homes gutted by artillery fire.
