2nd Infantry Division Patrol Moving Through the Ruins of Harperscheid, Winter 1944-1945

American infantrymen of the 2nd Infantry Division move cautiously through the ruined village of Harperscheid during the winter campaign of 1944-1945. Fighting in the Ardennes-Eifel border region, following the Battle of the Bulge, left many small villages reduced to rubble, their churches and homes gutted by artillery fire. This photograph, bearing its original Signal Corps caption, documents the harsh conditions U.S. soldiers faced as they advanced through devastated terrain toward the Roer River. Project: 218682
