American Engineers Blasting a Foxhole in Frozen Ground, Berg, Belgium

Captioned 'Blasting Dugout, Berg, Bel.,' this photograph shows American engineers using explosive charges to excavate a fighting position in ground frozen solid by the severe winter of 1944-45. Such improvised methods were common during the Battle of the Bulge, when conventional digging tools proved ineffective against the hard, frozen earth of the Ardennes. Project: 218682
