Fire and Blast Damage to Interior Compartment, USS Saratoga (CV-3)
This photograph documents fire and blast damage sustained within a compartment of USS Saratoga (CV-3), one of the U.S. Navy's earliest fleet aircraft carriers. Images such as this were captured by Navy damage-control photographers to record the extent of destruction following combat action, informing both repair efforts and official damage reports. Saratoga endured multiple kamikaze and bomb strikes during her World War II service in the Pacific, most severely off Iwo Jima in February 1945. Project: 218681
