Interior Kamikaze Damage Aboard USS Saratoga (CV-3), February 1945
This U.S. Navy damage-survey photograph documents the severe structural destruction aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) following kamikaze strikes on February 21, 1945, off Iwo Jima. Torn steel plating and buckled framework illustrate the violent force of the attacks, which killed 123 crew members and wounded 192 others, ultimately forcing Saratoga out of frontline service for the remainder of the war.
