Military Convoy Crossing a Combat Engineer Pontoon Bridge
American vehicles cross a hastily built pontoon bridge, one of thousands erected by Army combat engineers to replace spans destroyed during the retreat of German forces across Western Europe. The stone lock house in the background, still standing beside the wreckage of the original crossing, is a common sight in photographs from this period, when engineers worked around the clock to keep supply lines and reinforcements moving forward for units like the 101st Airborne Division.
