Dressed Ship with Crew Manning the Rail, USS Saint Paul (CA-73), San Diego Bay, circa 1970
USS Saint Paul (CA-73), fully dressed with signal flags from bow to mast and her crew manning the rail, is shown entering San Diego Bay with the city's skyline in the distance. Dressing ship with flags and manning the rail were reserved for special occasions -- national holidays, changes of command, or a warship's return from deployment. As the flagship of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Nine, Saint Paul's arrivals in San Diego during 1970 marked welcome respites between combat deployments off the coast of Vietnam. Project: 218675
