Deck Maintenance Detail on Helicopter Landing Pad, USS Saint Paul (CA-73), circa 1970

Sailors aboard the heavy cruiser USS Saint Paul (CA-73) perform routine maintenance on the ship's helicopter landing deck, scrubbing and repainting the nonskid surface beneath the barrels of an 8-inch gun turret. Saint Paul, the last all-gun heavy cruiser in active U.S. Navy service, spent much of the late 1960s and 1970 conducting naval gunfire support missions off the coast of Vietnam as flagship of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Nine. Scenes like this one illustrate the constant labor of shipboard upkeep that kept a forty-year-old warship combat-ready far from home. Project: 218675
