The Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), Hitler's Alpine Retreat Above Berchtesgaden, Germany, 1945

The Kehlsteinhaus, known to American troops as the 'Eagle's Nest,' was built as a ceremonial retreat for Adolf Hitler above Berchtesgaden, Germany. In early May 1945, elements of the 101st Airborne Division advanced into the Berchtesgaden area as Nazi Germany collapsed, and the site quickly became a symbol of the regime's downfall, visited and photographed by countless American soldiers in the war's final days.
