Village Sign for Savy, Belgium, in Snow-Covered Countryside — Ardennes Campaign, Winter 1944-45
A roadside sign marks the Belgian hamlet of Savy, its name rendered in stark contrast against a snow-blanketed winter landscape. Situated just northwest of Bastogne, Savy lay within the perimeter defended by the 101st Airborne Division during the December 1944 Battle of the Bulge, near the wooded positions at Bois Jacques and the village of Foy. Photographs of village signage such as this were commonly taken by soldiers to document their route of advance and the geography of the campaign through the brutal Ardennes winter. Project: 218667
