Flight Engineer's Station Aboard a California Air National Guard Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter
This photograph offers a rare view into the flight engineer's station of a California Air National Guard Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter. Seated among an array of toggle switches, gauges, and engine controls, the flight engineer -- a senior enlisted specialist -- was responsible for monitoring and managing the aircraft's four powerful radial engines throughout flight, a critical role on large piston-engine military transports of the 1950s and 1960s.
