Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, California Air National Guard, on the Flight Line
Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter of the California Air National Guard, shown on the ramp at a Southern California base. Derived from the B-29 Superfortress bomber, the C-97 combined a stretched, double-lobed fuselage with the wings, tail, and engines of the B-50, giving it a distinctive high-capacity cargo hold. Air National Guard units flew Stratofreighters and their tanker variant, the KC-97, from the 1950s through the 1970s, providing strategic airlift and aerial refueling in support of both state and federal missions.
