At left, a soldier in the standard wool service uniform and campaign hat poses beside his barracks; at right, a comrade shoulders an M1903 Springfield rifle and field pack in the company street. Wooden barracks like these were erected by the thousands across the United States in 1917 to house and train the rapidly expanding National Army before its deployment to the Western Front.
