Newspaper Account of a Meuse-Argonne Reunion Paired with Camp Photograph, 1918
This newspaper account describes a poignant reunion at the Presidio of San Francisco between two soldiers of the 316th Engineers who fought together in the September 1918 Meuse-Argonne Offensive near Gesnes, France. Private Olds had helped carry his wounded comrade, Private Pinard, from the battlefield believing him mortally injured; the two did not learn of each other's survival until meeting again months later. The accompanying photograph of a soldier relaxing outside his tent offers a quieter counterpoint, capturing the everyday rhythms of camp life between such moments of combat and crisis. Project: 218653
