On May 30, 1969, California National Guard troops stood watch along a barbed-wire barrier erected around People's Park in Berkeley, California, as an estimated 30,000 demonstrators marched in protest of the university's actions. The confrontation over the vacant University of California lot became one of the defining flashpoints of the era's anti-establishment and free-speech movements, prompting Governor Ronald Reagan to deploy the National Guard to the city.
