Hidden within a pile of hay and dry weeds, a machine gun position built by soldiers of the 185th Infantry, 40th Division, was nearly invisible during the Fourth Army War Games near San Luis Obispo in August 1937. Devised by Pfc. John Focall and Pvt. Donald Hecox of a Pasadena, California unit, this camouflage technique illustrates the growing emphasis American units placed on concealing crew-served weapons in the years leading up to World War II.
