Verso/Caption Sheet: Sunset Gun Ceremony and Marine Embarkation Preparations, San Diego, August 1937
The back of a 1937 wire photograph describing the evening 'sunset gun' ceremony at Marine Base San Diego, taken as Marines there prepared to embark for China amid the escalating Sino-Japanese conflict in Shanghai. The newspaper reference stamp dates the print's filing to August 27, 1937, just weeks after fighting broke out between Japanese and Chinese forces prompted a major U.S. Marine reinforcement of the Shanghai garrison.
