Barbed Wire Beach Defenses at Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii, WWII Era (c. 1942)
Coils of barbed wire line once-idyllic Waikiki Beach in this wartime photograph, a visible reminder of the martial law and invasion defenses imposed across Oahu after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Even so, swimmers and sunbathers continued to use the beach throughout the war, producing this striking juxtaposition of leisure and military precaution. Project: 218628
