Thatched-Roof Okinawan Village and Terraced Hillside, Okinawa, WWII Era
This landscape view shows a traditional Okinawan farming village of thatch-roofed houses set against a hillside terraced for agriculture. Villagers travel the dirt road carrying goods in the customary manner, while two American servicemen walk in the foreground. Photographs such as this, taken during the World War II era, document both the island's terrain and the rural way of life encountered by U.S. forces during and after the 1945 Okinawa campaign.
