The distinctive conical peak known as "The Pinnacle" (Iegusuku, or Gusuku Yama) dominates the skyline of Ie Shima, a small island off Okinawa's northwest coast. U.S. forces captured the island in fierce fighting in April 1945, an action during which war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed nearby.
