Steamers of this type carried freight and passengers between Tidewater ports before highways and railroads dominated regional commerce. The photograph was preserved in a personal album kept by a crewman of the protected cruiser USS Columbia (C-12), documenting the everyday waterfront scenes encountered during shore liberty in the Spanish-American War and Great White Fleet era.
