Five-Masted Commercial Schooner Under Full Sail, Photographed at Sea, c. 1900s
A large five-masted schooner under full sail, photographed at sea, likely from the deck of a U.S. Navy warship underway. Multi-masted schooners such as this carried bulk cargo along the Atlantic coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s and were a familiar sight to sailors on naval and merchant vessels alike. This image is preserved in the album of a crewman who served aboard the protected cruiser USS Columbia (C-12) during that era. Project: 218611
