Hand-Tinted Photograph of a Bastion Garita, Walls of Intramuros, Manila, Philippines

A hand-tinted photograph of a corner bastion and sentry turret (garita) along the historic walls of Intramuros, the fortified Spanish colonial district of Manila. Built beginning in the 16th century, these massive stone defenses once encircled the old city. Photographs like this one, hand-colored for personal albums, were popular souvenirs among visitors and servicemen stationed in the Philippines before the widespread destruction of Intramuros during the 1945 Battle of Manila.
