Soldiers with Heavy Coastal Defense Gun, Manila Bay Area, Early 20th Century
This early twentieth-century photograph depicts American or allied soldiers posed alongside a massive breech-loading coastal defense gun, likely photographed at a fortified position in the Manila Bay area of the Philippines. Coastal artillery batteries such as this one played a central role in defending strategic harbors during the years following the Spanish-American War and through the First World War, when the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps maintained extensive gun emplacements guarding the approaches to Manila.
