Wreckage of a Crashed and Burned Aircraft in an Open Field, c. 1930s
The charred remains of a crashed aircraft, its engine block and cylinder banks still recognizable amid the twisted wreckage, lie in an open field. Photographs such as this one, preserved in a personal album from the 1930s conflict era in China, offer a rare ground-level record of the young but rapidly escalating role of air power in that period's warfare.
