The Snapshots in Time Collection
Album Page: Hotel Chamberlain and The Dock, Hampton Roads, Virginia, c. 1900-1910
This album page preserves two views of Hampton Roads, Virginia, home to the famed Hotel Chamberlain resort and a principal U.S. Navy anchorage in the early twentieth century. Hampton Roads served as the departure point for the Great White Fleet's world cruise in December 1907, and stops here were common for Atlantic Fleet cruisers such as USS Columbia. The handwritten captions -- 'Hotel Chamberlain, Hampton Roads, Va.' and 'The Dock, H.R., Va.' -- reflect the personal, souvenir nature of this sailor's photo album. Project: 218602
