U.S. Navy Sailors and Local Residents, Farewell Liberty Party, St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, c. 1905-1910
A liberty party of U.S. Navy sailors poses with local residents outside a shop in St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, sometime in the early 1900s. Dressed in white summer service uniforms with the traditional black neckerchief, these enlisted men -- likely crewmen of USS Columbia or a companion vessel -- represent the 'Old Navy' of the Spanish-American War and Great White Fleet era. The Pabst beer advertisement and hand-lettered 'Freezing' sign hint at the modest tavern where this farewell liberty call was spent before the ship's departure. Project: 218602
