The Snapshots in Time Collection
Album Page: 'Navy Yard at Philadelphia' with USS Dixie and USS Denver, and Inset 'The Searchlight,' c. 1904-1910
This annotated album page documents a visit to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, showing the auxiliary vessel USS Dixie and the gunboat USS Denver moored at the busy pier. Dixie, a converted merchant steamer, served as a transport and later a destroyer tender, while Denver, commissioned in 1904, was one of the Navy's small 'Denver-class' gunboats used for patrol and diplomatic duty. A separate inset photo, labeled 'The Searchlight,' captures a shipboard searchlight platform amid the rigging of the vessel from which these photographs were taken. The handwritten captions are original to the album's early-1900s compiler. Project: 218602
