The Snapshots in Time Collection
Deteriorated Snapshot Fragment, USS Columbia (C-12) Photograph Album, c. 1898-1910s
This fragmentary snapshot, badly damaged by silver mirroring, staining, and physical tearing, comes from the personal photograph album of a sailor aboard the protected cruiser USS Columbia (C-12), compiled in the early 1900s. While the original scene can no longer be clearly identified, faint traces of two figures suggest a candid shipboard or liberty moment, echoing other images preserved elsewhere in the same album. The print's condition illustrates the fragility of early twentieth-century gelatin-silver photographs and the importance of archival preservation. Project: 218601
