Spectators and Toreros in a Mexican Bullring, Arena View from the Stands
A sailor's souvenir photograph of a bullfight in Mexico, captured from the grandstands of a plaza de toros during shore liberty in the early 1900s. Bullfighting was a popular spectacle for visiting American naval crews touring Mexican ports, and such candid photographs -- taken with early handheld cameras -- offer a rare street-level view of both the crowd's exuberance and the choreography of the corrida.
