"On the Road to Blue Beard's," St. Thomas, Early 1900s (Enlarged Detail)
Two sailors, out of uniform on liberty, pause along a dirt road above the harbor at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, en route to the hilltop landmark known as Blue Beard's Castle. Caribbean ports such as this were frequent stops for the U.S. fleet at the turn of the twentieth century, offering crews rare opportunities for sightseeing and relaxation ashore. Project: 218600
