USS Columbia (C-12) Protected Cruiser at Anchor in a Mountain-Ringed Harbor
This photograph, preserved in a personal USS Columbia album, shows the protected cruiser at anchor in a mountain-ringed harbor during one of her many cruises around the turn of the twentieth century. Commissioned in 1894 and renowned for her speed, USS Columbia served in the Spanish-American War and undertook extensive training and goodwill deployments in the decades that followed. Images like this one, taken by a crew member and kept in a personal photo album, offer a rare, informal glimpse of shipboard life and the far-flung ports American sailors visited during this era of expanding U.S. naval power.
