Pasted to the back of this wirephoto is AP correspondent C. Yates McDaniel's own account of photographing a converted, unarmed British minelayer -- once a Yangtze River steamer -- under Japanese bombing during the fall of Singapore in February 1942. The ship, still flying the White Ensign, was sunk by further bombing the next morning. The Oakland Tribune's ownership stamp records the print's later life in a newspaper's photo archive.
