The Snapshots in Time Collection
Scrapbook Page from a U.S. Navy Sailor's Photograph Album: Shipmates, the Schooner Samuel S. Pierce, and Mascot "Billie"
This album page from a U.S. Navy sailor's personal photograph collection captures the informal side of shipboard life in the early twentieth century. At upper right, the four-masted commercial schooner Samuel S. Pierce is shown putting to sea under full sail from Hampton Roads, Virginia, a major naval and merchant shipping hub. At lower left, three grinning sailors identified as Winters, Kilton, and Buteau lean over a ship's rail in a candid, humorous snapshot titled "Soldiers Three." At lower right, the crew's goat mascot "Billie" stands on a dockside quay. Together the images illustrate the blend of maritime commerce, naval service, and shipboard camaraderie that defined a sailor's world during this period. Project: 218597
