Sailors and dockyard workers pose on wooden scaffolding erected around the exposed twin screw propellers and rudder of a U.S. Navy cruiser during a dry-dock overhaul, circa the late 1890s to early 1900s. Periodic dry-docking allowed crews to clean marine growth from the hull, inspect the propellers and rudder, and make underwater repairs.
