Traditional Lattice-Doored Shopfront, Japanese Building Facade
This photograph documents the traditional lattice-door construction (koshido) common to Japanese shopfronts and merchant houses of the era. Such wooden sliding screens, seen here on a quiet street during the Occupation period, exemplify the vernacular architecture that characterized Japanese towns before postwar reconstruction and modernization reshaped much of the built environment.
