Navy Crew Posing Before Beached Landing Ship, Occupied Japan, circa 1945-1946
This group photograph shows U.S. Navy sailors posing on a beach before a weathered amphibious landing ship, its bow doors open to the sand. Vessels of this type, essential to WWII Pacific island invasions, continued service into the Occupation period, ferrying troops, vehicles, and supplies. Informal crew photographs such as this were a common way sailors documented their service and camaraderie far from home. Project: 218591
