This snapshot documents the entrance sign at Schoenbrunn Village near New Philadelphia, Ohio, marking the site of Ohio's first permanent European-founded settlement. Established May 3, 1772 by Moravian missionary David Zeisberger as a Christian mission to the Delaware (Lenape) people, Schoenbrunn ('beautiful spring') was home to the state's first church and first school before being abandoned in 1777 amid the turmoil of the American Revolution. The village was archaeologically excavated and reconstructed beginning in the 1920s under the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, and remains a preserved historic site today.
